60 Seconds with Phil Quinn, National Account Manager

As a child, what was your dream job?

To be a chef. I’m a passionate cook and love to host a dinner party. My signature dish is chilli con carne – I have a secret recipe!

My dark chocolate chip cookies are also winners amongst family and friends. If Gordon Ramsey is reading this, I challenge you to a cook off!

Do you have any secret talents?

I’m a black belt in Kung Fu and used to play squash for Lancashire. I’m also quite good at imitating celebrities, such as, Roy Hodgson, Sean Dyche and Donald Trump!

What is the best advice you have received?

However big or small the task, always put in 100% effort. Don’t treat something as less important, even if it’s a simple task. This is the same for working with people no-one is any less significant to you. You can learn so much from so many different types of people, whether that’s knowledge, inspiration or advice.

"One in five applications will need to be placed away from the high street lenders...I say look at specialist lending as a tool to help your clients, not an entirely different sector."

Who is your all-time hero, and why?

Definitely Ronnie O’Sullivan. I absolutely love snooker. His commitment, talent and enthusiasm are outstanding. He’s been through a lot and it shows that if you have your sights set on something and work hard, you can achieve great things.

What is the biggest misconception about your job?

One of the biggest misconceptions is when brokers say 'I don't do your type of business'. The specialist market is slowly becoming the new mainstream. All brokers will work with some customers who could benefit from an individual approach to underwriting because of their employment or credit record. One in five applications will need to be placed away from the high street lenders. To those brokers, I say look at specialist lending as a tool to help your clients, not an entirely different sector.

What do you like to do after work to unwind?

After work, I love spending quality time with my wife, going for walks in the countryside, cooking and baking too. I also enjoy working out in the gym, but the biggest unwind is watching Coronation Street!
