As a child, what was your dream job?
As a young child I wanted to be a professional footballer, but then I went through a few different phases. First, I wanted to become a farmer because I love the outdoors, then I got a bit lazy and wanted to become a vicar as I thought I’d only have to work on Sundays, and then I developed a passion for health and fitness so decided on becoming a personal trainer or running my own gyms. Clearly I got distracted somewhere along the way and here I am.
But I don’t regret a thing. I love the camaraderie that exists in our industry across lenders, distributors and brokers. Together we play a key part in providing security for customers and we should all take pride in that.
Do you have any secret talents?
I actually don’t, although I am teaching myself to play the guitar and seem to be doing ok so far. Apart from that I can cook pretty well when I put my mind to it and so like a good dinner party and I actually think my total incompetence at DIY is a talent. You should see the size of the hole I can drill in a wall just to put a picture up - I use a lot of Polyfilla!
What is the best advice you have received?
I have been lucky enough to work with some very talented people. My first ever boss once said to me “Paul, getting better never stops” and it turns out she was right. That mindset has worked well for me and makes me strive to learn as much as I can from the people I meet.
More recently I learned a lesson from someone I have a huge amount of respect for. It was “Don’t wait. Life goes faster than you think, so don’t miss an opportunity if it feels right”.

Who is your all-time hero, and why?
There are lots of people I admire, but I would have to say my Dad. He passed away at 52, but what a guy he was. Dedicated to his family, he worked so hard to provide for us, treated my mum like a princess every day and soaked up all the pressure that comes with life as he progressed his career. He was a man of few words but when he spoke you listened. Plus, he never missed my rugby or football matches when I was a kid regardless of how busy he was.
What is the biggest misconception about your job?
I am not sure there is a misconception about the job I do now. I always hope people can see what I do. Having just joined Pepper Money I will be developing ways to deliver against our strategic goals and values through a happy, talented and well-motivated team. I will continue to spend a lot of time out there with intermediaries because one thing I know is that asking the right questions and listening carefully will often shape changes we make, so that our proposition hits the mark.
What do you like to do after work to unwind?
I like to keep fit, so I go to the gym although that would normally be before work. In an evening to switch off and relax I might catch up with friends or family or get stuck into something on Netflix.
