60 Seconds with Martin Brown, Head of Products at Pepper Money

As a child, what was your dream job?

I wanted to be a footballer or work in a bank. The first one was cruelly cut short by injury when playing semi-professional football, but the second one actually happened! I’ve previously worked at Barclay’s, Lloyds and Bank of Ireland in a similar product development role, which is surprising because my dad was a milkman!

Do you have any secret talents?

I used to play midfield semi-professionally for Chatham Town and Maidstone United football club in my early teens (a long time ago!).

What is the best advice you have received?

My Godfather who was the National Accountant for ANZ Bank in the UK told me to always treat everyone the same. Whether they are a barrow boy or a director – it’s always important to treat people with the same level of respect.

"In our market, it’s so important to make sure we are offering the right criteria to help brokers find a home for their clients and to ensure that the products we offer work well for their clients too."

Who is your all-time hero, and why?

Bobby Moore. He was a gentleman, a great footballer and remains the only Englishman to lift the World Cup.

What is the biggest misconception about your job?

That it’s easy and purely about rates and LTVs. In our market, it’s so important to make sure we are offering the right criteria to help brokers find a home for their clients and to ensure that the products we offer work well for their clients too. Product development is a much more involved and intricate process than people might think.

What do you like to do after work to unwind?

I love spending time with my two young boys aged 5 and 2. We regularly go bike riding and play various sports including football. I also enjoy winding down with friends and family.
